Question from Dana:

Hey Sarah

In addition to After Grad, as I mentioned before, I also have funds for an “on campus” experience that I’d like to invite your SWACsters to.  It was originally slated to be an overnight trip … wondering what you think of that?  I’m thinking of either doing the overnight or just doing two full days (one out on the road for sector visits and one day at the college).

Some questions for you:

·         Do you like the overnight idea or do you think two days without the overnight is better?

·         Is there a particular sector you think your students would like to visit (trades, manufacturing, medical, etc)?

·         The day at the college would involve personality assessment stuff, employment information, OSAP/financial planning workshop.  Do you see any other needs that your students have that could be addressed?

·         Dates: I’m thinking very early June.  Thoughts?

Your students wouldn’t be the only participants so I’m not designing it completely around your group (no pressure) but I’d love your input.  And since I have money maybe we could get someone you have worked with already (Janick, Sandra) to provide a workshop.

-Infographic

"Health Canada does not have specific recommendations in terms of teaspoons or grams perday of sugar Canadians should consume. According to Statistics Canada, in 2004, the average Canadian consumed 26 teaspoons of sugar per day."

Jamie Oliver-

In the UK, there are lots of figures out there so it can get confusing. Let’s break it down:

  • The reference intake – the Government’s guideline daily amount – of “total sugars” (both naturally occurring and free sugars) for the average adult is a maximum of 90g per day, but they don’t currently provide specific guidelines for children.
  • The Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) gives guidance on the consumption of free sugars. They recommend that our daily intake should be less than 5% of our total energy intake. So what does that really mean?
    • Children aged 4 to 6 should have no more than 19g or 5 teaspoons of free sugars per day
    • Children aged 7 to 10 should have no more than 24g or 6 teaspoons of free sugars per day
    • Children aged 11 years and upwards, as well as adults, should have no more than 30g or 7 teaspoons of free sugar per day

– To put this into perspective, a typical 330ml can of fizzy drink can contain up to 35g or 9 teaspoons of free sugar –

Note from Jennipher:

The students did an excellent job this morning. We went for a walk, as it was beautiful out.  We walked up the road and almost to the graveyard and back.  About 40 minutes.  The students embraced the opportunity.

The students have a test next Tuesday, and with that we reviewed sample questions and had a detailed conversation about copy and paste, and that if that does occur the test would score an automatic zero. They can use their class notes and text book for the test.

We also discussed the importance of bringing their books each week to class.

The test is worth 5%.  We focused on the importance of being prepared for the test, and the correlation to success on a test.

We did have several reminders about cell phones.  Part of today's course content was on the expectations that leaders are consistent in expectations. I reminded them several times that my expectation will not change, and they will hear reminders throughout the class to put the phones away.  We also chatted about how reasonable this is based on the number of short breaks they are given to check phones.  I really hope they embraced the expectation, as it is very much an employable skill in their future endeavors.

*** Mention of there being an online chat group for the class, that's an awesome way to communicate.  I encourage you all to keep that space drama free as well since most of you are in SWAC to get away from that.  If there's every anything on there you aren't comfortable with, I'd suggest using your leadership skills to communicate that with the person or to just not be a part of it somehow...Why am I mentioning this?  I've seen chat groups as really effective communication tools but also the opposite so...Just something to keep in mind :  )

About the Teacher

 Ms. Burke

I just got back from an incredible summer of circumnavigating Georgian Bay on a 30 ft sailboat.  Last year was my first year teaching at CCI and during Semester one, my husband and I took a leave of absence and took off on a trip of a lifetime!  We spent 4 months in the Mediterranean sailing, living out of a van and rock climbing throughout Greece, Turkey (briefly), Croatia, Italy, France and Spain.  For most of January we were skiing in Alberta and British Columbia.  You'll learn from reading the following Essay that one of the things I live for in life is adventure!  I'm looking forward to learning about you and your passions!

Five Things to Know About Sarah Burke (Sample Assignment)

The Importance of Family & Friends

Sarah believes that without her great support network of family and friends

it would have been difficult to get to where she is in life.  Sarah has had

and values the many unique friendships she’s had over the years but has

learned that an individual is very lucky if they can say that they have one

true friend that is with them throughout their life.  Friends may change with

the seasons of life but one thing is for certain, family is always there and

they are willing to accept you for who you are.  Sarah has lived and traveled

very far from her family but the magnetism that connects them, always pulls

her back.  Sarah feels very lucky to have such a great family.

Adventure

Adventure is a huge part of Sarah’s life.  She feels like she would go crazy

without a little (or huge) adventure now and then.  Growing up, Sarah always

felt like there must be more to life than the tiny town of Tottenham.  Her

mother, aunts and grandmother were always traveling and she made it a goal of

hers from a young age to try and see as much of the world as possible.  Sarah

has also always enjoyed adventure sports and craves the adrenalin and

exhaustion that comes after a day of exerting ones self.  Sarah and her

husband used to live in Canmore, Alberta where they’ve had some epic ski and

boarding powder days and hiked up some of the most beautiful mountain terrain

in the world.  They with their daughter now live in Collingwood, Ontario and since moving

here they’ve been pursuing their love of sailing.  Sarah also

loves to rock climb and has climbed all over Canada, the United States,

Europe, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.  She just returned from an incredible trip

sailing and rock climbing around the Mediterranean. Not all sport has to be so

extreme though.  She also loves taking walks, swimming, riding her bike and

skate boarding on her long board.

Teaching

Sarah feels like she’s always been a teacher.  Beginning with her early days

in the crawlspace of her families home in Tottenham, where her parents helped

her set up a chalk board and school desks, she taught her younger brother and

sister valuable (if not slightly obscure) lessons for hours on end.  Her part

time jobs as a teenager were teaching swimming, skiing and snowboarding

lessons; she continued teaching these skills right through University where

she also became a Teacher's Assistant for the Outdoor Recreation department.

She’s also taught programs for Parks Canada and the National Outdoor

Leadership School.  Her reason for being involved with teaching from such a

young age was not because she felt as though it was a calling but it was a

way for her to have fun and in many cases keep fit while making money.  She’s

taught in Alberta in Morley and Canmore, at Stayner, Alliston,

Georgian College with SWAC and now here at CCI in Collingwood. Along

the way she picked up the skills to become what she hopes is a great

teacher.

Writing

Writing is a way to reflect on experiences, engage one’s creativity and

imagination and communicate with the world around us.  Writing is a part of

Sarah’s life but she always wishes she had time to do more.  Sarah believes

in the importance of communicating effectively and constantly strives to

improve her skills by studying the craft, publishing her work and teaching

other adults these skills in creative writing courses.  She feels that

teaching others is one of the best ways to learn something and gain

confidence about the subject area.

The Environment:

Sarah tries not to stress or take things in life too seriously but she does

have great concern for our environment and takes environmental issues very

seriously.  Any species on the planet has an impact on the environment.

Sarah knows that to focus on the problems humans create can be overwhelming

and can leave people feeling ridden with guilt.  She feels it is necessary to

acknowledge how people impact the environment and learn about what can be

done to minimize this impact.  After many years of feeling frustrated with

the lack of progress she has seen in others in terms of their attitudes and

seeming lack of respect toward the environment she does see some hope.

She feels that if people would try to change one habit in their life each

month, week or day our communities would benefit.  She also feels that if we

want to slow down the effects of Climate Change that we need to be

petitioning our government to do more.  The many environmental initiatives

that she’s developed and run and the children’s book that she wrote: "Kids Go

Wild: Adventures in the Canadian Rockies", and most recently bee keeping reflects her passion for making a difference and encouraging others to do the same.
