Monday March 23rd:

I hope you're all healthy and were able to spend some quality time with your families over the March Break.  My family decided it was better to stay put rather than head out to Quebec and we've had a nice week of daily jogs, workouts, reading, board games, cooking delicious meals and catching up on Netflix.  These are unusual times for sure and I'm reminded daily of what I'm thankful for.

For now, what I'd like you to do each day is the following:

-A daily journal entry about your day.  Be sure to include your schedule if you have one.  For example our's looked like this today:

Breakfast

Chores/laundry

Facetime with a friend

Jogging

Training our dog Ginger

Lunch

Planting seeds for our Garden

Reading a good book

Taking a walk

Dinner

Lighting a fire/Marshmallows

Netflix

Bed

Next, I'd like you to read an enjoyment novel at your reading level and take process notes each day (what pg did you start on, what pg did you end and do a re-tell for each day)

I'll be checking all this so make sure you do it!!!

Hang in there, we'll get through this!

Be sure to get great sleep, eat healthy and get some fresh air and exercise each day if you're feeling well.

Miss you!

Also, as strange as it may or may not feel not being able to go to school, try not to stress too much about it!  Think about something you've always wanted to do or try/learn about and do it!  For example:

-sewing

-guitar

-gardening

-space

-an invention?

Go for it!  You actually have some time!

Friday March 13th:

* We did not get to watch the videos below due to the lack of connection today.  Be sure to watch!

Canada Reads 2018: Cherie Dimaline on The Marrow Thieves

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=8&v=XEzjA5RoLv0&feature=emb_logo

Education is key. We must start with young people, sharing the true history of the legacy of colonial policies and practices, and how they impact Indigenous people. If children grew up knowing this, they would at least have an opportunity to understand Indigenous people in Canada differently and would not have to “unbecome” or confront their Canadian identity later in life – a painful process.

(Janet Smylie, associate professor, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto and holder of the CIHR Applied Public Health Chair in Indigenous health knowledge and information. Métis, with kin ties to Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan.)

Listen and follow along with the First 3 chapters:

Start class with a lesson/discussion about:

  •  language and Metis culture (ex)Mitch says “tabernacle”: slideshow*
  • pop quiz

*see  slideshow about “Frenchie’s Coming - To Story
Q&A Questions: Pages 1-14

  1. From what narrative perspective is the story told?
  2. Who is the narrator and who is he with at the beginning of the chapter?
  3. What details are given to develop the narrator’s physical and emotional health?
  4. Given the details given on pages 1-2, where are the characters in relation to present day Ontario?
  5. What sacrifice does Mitch make and why?
  6. How does the writer create a sense of fear/action/suspense by page 4?
  7. What line indicates that the narrator is sharing a flashback?
  8. On page 6 there are more details about the setting. Comment upon  the physical and symbolic details about the direction that the characters discuss.
  9. List and discuss details on pages 8-11 that develop a sense of a dystopia.
